Man Hunt a Hoax
A hoax last Saturday morning, August 14th, created headaches for several law enforcement agencies, including the Freestone County Sheriff’s Department, the Teague Police Department, Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ).
It also caused concern for several Freestone County residents who were informed by phone around 5:30 a.m. that an individual, thought to be a kidnapper, may be in their area and was considered “armed and dangerous.”
Joel Phillips informed the Freestone County Sheriff’s Department that he had escaped after being hijacked in his car in Houston where he is a resident.
TDCJ called out canine trackers from the Boyd Unit and Tennessee Colony, and a helicopter was deployed to aid in the search of the would be victim’s kidnapper.
Phillips finally confessed that it was all a hoax. He was arrested in Freestone County for filing a false report and has since bonded out of jail.
The drama for the residents ended around 7:30 a.m. when they got a second call that all was okay.
Mary McDonald reporting.
